Season Over - Which Teams are Finished?
Early in April, every team in the major leagues is feeling good about their chances. Big market, small market – it doesn’t matter. Early April brings optimism from every corner of the baseball world.
However, it doesn’t take long to see which teams are in line for a long, long season. Which teams should start looking toward the 2009 baseball season? Here’s my list of teams that already have no shot at postseason glory.
Washington Nationals
This one is really no surprise. The Nationals were expected to be bad and they are following through on that prophecy. The bad part for Nationals fans is that the future doesn’t look especially bright. Washington is desperate for a star to come along and pull them out of their malaise.
San Francisco Giants
While the Giants’ record isn’t that bad, their hitting is that bad. Bengie Molina swings a nice bat but when he’s your cleanup hitter, something is wrong. Year one After Bond is going to be a transitional year for the Giants. Honestly, it may be the first of many transitional years.
Texas Rangers
The Rangers have always had bad pitching. The problem is that now their hitting is also poor. Josh Hamilton has been impressive but he can’t carry the entire offensive load. To top it off, the Rangers aren’t very good in the field, either. Last place in the AL West beckons.
Kansas City Royals
The Royals have a decent record. Their pitchers are solid. They have good, young players. But 2008 will again not be the year of the Royals. However, for the first time in a long while, Kansas City has hope for future seasons.
Early in April, every team in the major leagues is feeling good about their chances. Big market, small market – it doesn’t matter. Early April brings optimism from every corner of the baseball world.
However, it doesn’t take long to see which teams are in line for a long, long season. Which teams should start looking toward the 2009 baseball season? Here’s my list of teams that already have no shot at postseason glory.
Washington Nationals
This one is really no surprise. The Nationals were expected to be bad and they are following through on that prophecy. The bad part for Nationals fans is that the future doesn’t look especially bright. Washington is desperate for a star to come along and pull them out of their malaise.
San Francisco Giants
While the Giants’ record isn’t that bad, their hitting is that bad. Bengie Molina swings a nice bat but when he’s your cleanup hitter, something is wrong. Year one After Bond is going to be a transitional year for the Giants. Honestly, it may be the first of many transitional years.
Texas Rangers
The Rangers have always had bad pitching. The problem is that now their hitting is also poor. Josh Hamilton has been impressive but he can’t carry the entire offensive load. To top it off, the Rangers aren’t very good in the field, either. Last place in the AL West beckons.
Kansas City Royals

6) Raise your hand if you thought Cliff Lee would be 4-0, 0.28 with the Indians this spring; I better not see any hands.....
5) Of teams leading NBA series 3-0, they went 50-33 in Game 4, 24-9 in Game 5, 6-3 in Game 6, 3-0 in Game 7. Very tough odds to overcome for the Suns.
4) Joe Girardi has banned candy and ice cream from clubhouse, as if sweets are why Ian Kennedy isn't ready to pitch in major leagues. Kennedy was 7th-rated prospect in Fla State League; Kennedy and Johnny Cueto are only ones of top 20 on that list who are currently in the major leagues.
3) 10 years ago, Peyton Manning was not a clear-cut choice to be drafted ahead of Ryan Leaf. Thats how inexact a science the NFL Draft is. Seriously, some people preferred Leaf.

Gladiators won in LA last week, snapping its three-game skid; they're 2-2 on road, 3-1 against spread. Over is 6-1 in last seven Cleveland games.
Tampa Bay (2-5) @ Orlando (6-2)-- AFL's best rivalry finds the two teams going in opposite directions; Tampa lost five games in row (1-4 vs spread); they're 1-3 on road, losing by 21-8-2 pts winning at 1-6 Kansas City- they're 2-5 despite being favored in six of the seven games. Orlando won six row after 0-2 start. Over is 6-2 in Orlando games., 5-2 in Tampa Bay tilts.
Georgia (3-4) @ Arizona (3-4)-- Georgia lost two of three on the road, losing by 21-5 points, winning at winless Utah. Arizona is -12 in turnovers; they covered only try as favorite, as faves are 5-2 vs spread in their games this season. Five of the last six Rattler games stayed under the total. Last three Georgia games went over the total.

-- There is a ray of hope in St Pete, as Rays beat Boston in 11 innings, their fourth straight win. Amazing stat is that Rays' bullpen now has best ERA of any bullpen in major leagues.
-- As sun came up on April 26, Tampa is 12-11, Bronx 12-12.
-- Cubs' Reed Johnson made one of the greatest catches I've ever seen, diving on warning track in left-center, hitting his head on the wall as he slid.
-- Diamondbacks already have a 6.5-game lead in NL West.
-- Bobby Crosby made Ozzie Smith-like stop, going to left to rob Adrian Beltre of hit with tying run on second, as A's won in Seattle 4-3, despite getting no hits in last six innings. A's also got double play to escape bases loaded jam in the 8th.
-- Russell Martin wound up playing third base for first time in his major league career, after Nomar Garciaparra once again got hurt- he played there for last five innings in Dodgers' 8-7 win against the Rockies, and also was 4-4 with two walks.

Franchise Defining Trade Possibilities: NL Central
CINCINNATI REDS
The Reds have three catchers – Paul Bako, David Ross, and Javier Valentin – yet they still need catching help. However they can, the Reds need to get rid of the latter two and perhaps package Ryan Freel and Matt Belisle for a catcher. Who’s available? The Orioles’ Ramon Hernandez, the Padres’ Michael Barrett, and the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina are three that will likely be available by July 31. The Orioles don’t need any more outfielders so it’s likely they won’t make good trading partners. The Padres, depending on how they handle the Chase Headley situation, probably won’t, either.
The Cardinals also seem to have a decent outfield with Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel, and Chris Duncan. However, Ryan Freel not only fits Tony LaRussa’s scheme perfectly, but he would make an excellent outfield supersub that could still log 150 at-bats in the last two and a half months of the season. Trades between division rivals are usually no-no’s but Freel has been keen to his role as a bench-warmer even before the season started. For a player that has given so much of himself, he deserves to be somewhere where he starts more than once every four or five days. In St. Louis, he’d likely play every other day and could even platoon in center field with Rick Ankiel (however, Ankiel hits better against left-handers, oddly enough).
HOUSTON ASTROS
The Astros, believe it or not, are not far away from being a contending team, especially in the weak NL Central. They need a decent back-of-the-rotation pitcher, a closer, and a third baseman who provides at least league-average offense. These are issues that they will likely be unable to fix in-season, so the modus operandi is to get value on all of the players you don’t see sticking around: Mark Loretta, Geoff Blum, Brian Moehler, maybe even Brad Ausmus.
Even if the Astros find them within arm’s reach of the division lead, trading these players won’t hurt their chances too much and it will give them a chance to both allow some younger players to get some playing time and mix and match some role players. By doing this, they are still not conceding the season.
The Astros aren’t going to make any big trades and don’t need to anyway. They are in an ambiguous position that a lot of Ed Wade teams seem to find themselves: teetering between oblivion at the bottom of the division and tasting clubhouse-chilled champagne (not World Series champagne, mind you; simply division-winning champagne).
PITTSBURGH PIRATES
What isn’t wrong with the Pirates? Of all four major sports organizations – MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL – the Pirates are arguably the worst-run organization of all 122 teams.
The only regulars who shouldn’t be available are Nate McLouth and, perhaps, Xavier Nady. Jason Bay seems to have found himself after a poor 2007 season by his standards, but he’d help the Pirates organization best via trade and bringing back at least two top-notch prospects. Bay is signed through ’09, when he’s owed $7.5 million, and the Pirates organization would have to jump through a lot of hoops to get him to even consider re-signing.
Bay could best help the Mariners, either with Raul Ibanez moving to right field or Bay supplanting Jose Vidro as DH. Although the M’s gave up a lot of prospects to bring Erik Bedard to the West Coast from Baltimore, they might be willing to give up Wladimir Belentien and Juan Ramirez to bring Bay over, assuming they can sign Bay to an extension.
If it wasn’t patently obvious, the Pirates’ are absolutely awful at developing pitching. They have ruined more promising young arms in the last ten years than you can count on your two hands. That’s why it’s not surprising to see Ian Snell, Zach Duke, Paul Maholm, and Tom Gorzelanny all underperforming. Even so, the Pirates will have to live and die on those guys because they don’t have the payroll or the reciprocated interest to bring a big-name free agent to Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, they have a closer in Matt Capps who looks like he’s the real deal, although his high innings total the past two seasons as a reliever may bring cause for concern. He put up a 3.79 ERA in ’06 and a 2.28 ERA in ’07 to go along with 1.153 and 0.938 WHIP’s, respectively. Even better, he has only walked 30 batters in his career, spanning over 174 innings (or 1.5 walks per nine innings), and he’s struck out 131 (6.8 per nine). Mike Grabow and Damaso Marte (despite his slow start) are exceptional left-handed relievers/set-up men, so they have no problem with late-inning relief pitching.
CHICAGO CUBS
This is the fork in the road for the Cubs: if the Cubs do acquire Brian Roberts, and if they don’t. If they get Roberts, Mark DeRosa becomes available and, because he has slightly above-average offense and is versatile at all four infield spots and in the corners of the outfield, there will be a good amount of teams that will inquire for his services as an everyday player-slash-super sub. The Cubs don’t have any real weaknesses to address, at least that which a DeRosa trade would fix, so they’d be better off by asking for a B-level prospect.
If the Cubs don’t get Roberts, and if they see Felix Pie as their center fielder of the future, Reed Johnson becomes expendable and if he keeps hitting the way he has so far (and the way he did in 2006 in Toronto), the Cubs could get more for him than he’s actually worth – capitalize on his value. I’ve gone through the list of teams that could be in the market for an outfielder in my previous articles but the Marlins would be a good fit considering that he’s relatively cheap at $1.3 million just for 2008.
The Cubs could use a left-hander in the bullpen, so they could send Johnson and some cash to the Marlins for Taylor Tankersley, who has often been brought up in trade rumors recently.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
The Brewers have about a billion closers in their bullpen, but few decent, healthy starting pitchers. Okay, “billion” was a bit of exaggeration, but they have Eric Gagne (who has thus far been disappointing), Salomon Torres (12 saves in each of 2006 and ’07), David Riske (not a closer per se but he does have 21 career saves and has had a 100 or better ERA+ in each of the past five seasons ), and Guillermo Mota, who has given up only one run in ten innings so far.
Meanwhile, the Brewers find Ben Sheets in familiar territory – skipping a start due to health concerns – and have only one other league-average starter (Jeff Suppan). Yovani Gallardo made his first start of the season on April 20 and it was promising: one run in seven innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Carlos Villanueva and Dave Bush aren’t going to cut it.
Noah Lowry will likely be available from the San Francisco Giants, but the Giants aren’t needy in the bullpen area. No one out there that is available will be able to make a meaningful impact on the Brewers, so they need to pick up a big-time starter like C.C. Sabathia. He could be a simple two-month rental and they could eat the rest of his ’08 salary for the Indians in return for a prospect or two or they could go for the gold, trade for him, and sign him to a healthy extension before he hits free agency. Given how poorly he’s pitched so far this season despite his most recent start being a vast improvement, Sabathia might capitalize on his value best if he signs a mid-season extension. Believe it or not, the owners do know when they’re paying too much as we saw with Kyle Lohse going jobless throughout the off-season after seeing Carlos Silva sign for four years, $48 million and asking for something similar.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
As obvious as it seems, the path the Cardinals take depends on what kind of team they truly are. If they’re a mediocre 79-win team, then they need to think about trading Troy Glaus, Kyle Lohse, and Yadier Molina in favor of younger players.
Lohse is great trade bait because, while he is a serviceable starting pitcher, he’s not a 161 ERA+ pitcher as he is showing now. The Cardinals should hope he continues to pile up gaudy numbers so they can squeeze a bit more value out of him.
The Cards have a catching prospect by the name of Bryan Anderson who should be ready to contribute as a Major Leaguer soon. Jason LaRue can take over as the every day catcher; Anderson can either be called up or, more realistically, be promoted to AAA Memphis.
Glaus is trade bait for obvious reasons: he provides nothing to a team that needs to get younger and develop at a key corner infield position. The Cardinals should inquire about Brandon Wood, the third base prospect in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization currently in AAA Salt Lake. Given how full the Angels’ outfield is, they’ve been using Chone Figgins at third base, who provides adequate defense and above-average offense.
If the Cardinals find themselves in serious contention in the NL Central, they sorely need an upgrade at shortstop. Presently, Cesar Izturis is manning that position and his OBP is higher than his SLG (.333 to .237). Felipe Lopez should be available and he’d be a perfect fit. He wouldn’t cost too much and he’s a huge upgrade over Izturis.

That’s why it’s not surprising to see Ian Snell, Zach Duke, Paul Maholm, and Tom Gorzelanny all underperforming. Even so, the Pirates will have to live and die on those guys because they don’t have the payroll or the reciprocated interest to bring a big-name free agent to Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, they have a closer in Matt Capps who looks like he’s the real deal, although his high innings total the past two seasons as a reliever may bring cause for concern. He put up a 3.79 ERA in ’06 and a 2.28 ERA in ’07 to go along with 1.153 and 0.938 WHIP’s, respectively. Even better, he has only walked 30 batters in his career, spanning over 174 innings (or 1.5 walks per nine innings), and he’s struck out 131 (6.8 per nine). Mike Grabow and Damaso Marte (despite his slow start) are exceptional left-handed relievers/set-up men, so they have no problem with late-inning relief pitching.
CHICAGO CUBS
This is the fork in the road for the Cubs: if the Cubs do acquire Brian Roberts, and if they don’t. If they get Roberts, Mark DeRosa becomes available and, because he has slightly above-average offense and is versatile at all four infield spots and in the corners of the outfield, there will be a good amount of teams that will inquire for his services as an everyday player-slash-super sub. The Cubs don’t have any real weaknesses to address, at least that which a DeRosa trade would fix, so they’d be better off by asking for a B-level prospect.
If the Cubs don’t get Roberts, and if they see Felix Pie as their center fielder of the future, Reed Johnson becomes expendable and if he keeps hitting the way he has so far (and the way he did in 2006 in Toronto), the Cubs could get more for him than he’s actually worth – capitalize on his value. I’ve gone through the list of teams that could be in the market for an outfielder in my previous articles but the Marlins would be a good fit considering that he’s relatively cheap at $1.3 million just for 2008.
The Cubs could use a left-hander in the bullpen, so they could send Johnson and some cash to the Marlins for Taylor Tankersley, who has often been brought up in trade rumors recently.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
The Brewers have about a billion closers in their bullpen, but few decent, healthy starting pitchers. Okay, “billion” was a bit of exaggeration, but they have Eric Gagne (who has thus far been disappointing), Salomon Torres (12 saves in each of 2006 and ’07), David Riske (not a closer per se but he does have 21 career saves and has had a 100 or better ERA+ in each of the past five seasons ), and Guillermo Mota, who has given up only one run in ten innings so far.
Meanwhile, the Brewers find Ben Sheets in familiar territory – skipping a start due to health concerns – and have only one other league-average starter (Jeff Suppan). Yovani Gallardo made his first start of the season on April 20 and it was promising: one run in seven innings against the Cincinnati Reds. Carlos Villanueva and Dave Bush aren’t going to cut it.
Noah Lowry will likely be available from the San Francisco Giants, but the Giants aren’t needy in the bullpen area. No one out there that is available will be able to make a meaningful impact on the Brewers, so they need to pick up a big-time starter like C.C. Sabathia. He could be a simple two-month rental and they could eat the rest of his ’08 salary for the Indians in return for a prospect or two or they could go for the gold, trade for him, and sign him to a healthy extension before he hits free agency. Given how poorly he’s pitched so far this season despite his most recent start being a vast improvement, Sabathia might capitalize on his value best if he signs a mid-season extension. Believe it or not, the owners do know when they’re paying too much as we saw with Kyle Lohse going jobless throughout the off-season after seeing Carlos Silva sign for four years, $48 million and asking for something similar.
ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
As obvious as it seems, the path the Cardinals take depends on what kind of team they truly are. If they’re a mediocre 79-win team, then they need to think about trading Troy Glaus, Kyle Lohse, and Yadier Molina in favor of younger players.
Lohse is great trade bait because, while he is a serviceable starting pitcher, he’s not a 161 ERA+ pitcher as he is showing now. The Cardinals should hope he continues to pile up gaudy numbers so they can squeeze a bit more value out of him.
The Cards have a catching prospect by the name of Bryan Anderson who should be ready to contribute as a Major Leaguer soon. Jason LaRue can take over as the every day catcher; Anderson can either be called up or, more realistically, be promoted to AAA Memphis.
Glaus is trade bait for obvious reasons: he provides nothing to a team that needs to get younger and develop at a key corner infield position. The Cardinals should inquire about Brandon Wood, the third base prospect in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization currently in AAA Salt Lake. Given how full the Angels’ outfield is, they’ve been using Chone Figgins at third base, who provides adequate defense and above-average offense.
If the Cardinals find themselves in serious contention in the NL Central, they sorely need an upgrade at shortstop. Presently, Cesar Izturis is manning that position and his OBP is higher than his SLG (.333 to .237). Felipe Lopez should be available and he’d be a perfect fit. He wouldn’t cost too much and he’s a huge upgrade over Izturis.

Each team can brag about shaky pitching and poor clutch hitting, but only the Rangers can own their club record for most losses in April. The previous high of 15 happened three times. The 2008 Rangers also matched the 1982 squad for the worst start after 23 games since the team moved to Texas in 1972. Here’s a race to watch all season long or until Ron Washington loses his job, whichever comes first.

While neither Joe is faring as poorly as Tom Hanks in “Joe Versus the Volcano,” you know that I’m not the only one tracking the Joe Torre Dodgers versus the Joe Girardi Yankees. As of this date, it’s the Yankees at 12-11 over LA, 9-13.

Yes, there must be at least Yankees/Red Sox rivalry going on and this seems like as good a one as any. Here are three pitchers who are not quite ready to pitch in the majors throwing for teams who feel that their offenses are good enough to compensate. So far, Phil Hughes is 0-3 with a 7.85 ERA; Ian Kennedy is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA, and, the clear leader, Clay Buchholz is 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA.
FRANK THOMAS VERSUS JASON GIAMBI
Frank is back in Oakland, which means this battle of the over-the-hills can resume. The Big Hurt is hitting .159 with 3 homers and 11 RBI while Jason “I’m so sorry” Giambi has 3 homers and 7 RBI with a .161 batting average. Saying goodbye to this contest is David “Big Papi” Ortiz who is now up to .189 with 4 homers and 20 RBI.

This is so one-sided, I can’t imagine why the Rays just don’t pick up and move to David Archuletta Land (that’s a shout out to “American Idol” fans on your way to crowning the whiniest and most annoying dull singer since Bobby Goldsboro). After sweeping the Jays, the Rays are now 6-0 in the House of the Mouse. The atten
for the series finale was 9,540, the largest crowd of the three games this year. That brought the total for the series against the Blue Jays to 26,798 - 119 fewer fans than last year's set here against the Rangers. On top of that, Toronto's Alex Rios was ejected during last night's game against Tampa Bay when he slung his bat and slammed his batting helmet to the ground after striking out. His words deeply offended Snow White.

Sarah Marshall and her father, John, left Boston on Thursday aboard an Amtrak Acela bound for New York City. Not only do they have tickets to Saturday's NFL draft, they have prime seats. Sarah, a former Catherine McAuley basketball star and three-year starter at Boston College, has a connection. His name is Matt Ryan, the former Boston College quarterback. People who are paid to pay attention to such things say he will be the first quarterback chosen in the draft. He's at the top of his class. His signing bonus alone should make him an instant millionaire. He's also Sarah Marshall's longtime boyfriend.

This is a great idea that the San Francisco Giants did.
Bleacher seats for Giant baseball games are $18; for the game next Tuesday vs Colorado, when Tim Lincecum will pitch vs Rockies, the ticket costs $18, minus $1 for every strikeout Lincecum got in Petco Thursday night. Well, he struck out nine Padres, so the bleacher seats Tuesday will be $9 each.
13) Cubs won their 10,000th game Wednesday, then lost their 9,466th game yesterday. Giants are only other franchise that has won 10,000+ games.
12) Detroit Tigers didn't score run in Kenny Rogers' first three starts this season; they scored 27 runs in his last two.
11) Roy Halladay has pitched three complete games in a row, but lost two of the three; Blue Jays scored total of eight runs in his last three outings.
10) You think about how the Texas Rangers always have need for pitching, then you realize they traded Edison Volquez this winter, for Josh Hamilton, an outfielder; Volquez is doing great for the Reds, and while Hamilton is a fine player, Texas stinks because they don't have enough pitching. This happens when you hire an Ivy League whiz kid to run your team: apparently, they don't teach "Baseball is 90% pitching" in hallowed halls.
9) Arby's is buying Wendy's for $2.34B, much of which came from my wallet. Just keep drive-thru windows open late, fellas. Arby's and Wendy's are my favorite fast food places.
8) 24 of the Big East's top 30 basketball scorers are back next season; there could be as many as nine of the 16 teams in the preseason top 25. Tough to win in that league.
7) Drake hired an Arizona State assistant to replace departed Keno Davis, who took Providence's millions; wonder if Drake will run the Princeton offense, like the Sun Devils do?
6) NHL ratings on NBC are up 11% this season, so network is signing back up for next season. Hockey is making comeback, which is a good thing- they have very passionate fans.
5) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Doug LaBelle, who has made $207,008 on the links this season. So far, 27 golfers have earned at least $1M on Tour this season.
4) Name of the Day: Callix Crabbe, San Diego Padres.
3) Groups in St Petersburg, Washington DC, Salt Lake City are applying to host bowl games next season; if all get approved, there will be 35 freakin' bowl games next season, Last season, only seven bowl eligible teams didn't go bowling- do the math- there are going to be years where there aren't enough teams.
2) In their first 13 games next season, Pittsburgh Steelers play only two 1pm Sunday games. In weeks 8-14, Steelers play all of their games either at 4:15 or at night.
1) The #1 NFL story this summer might be the Bengals' refusal to trade Chad Johnson; I can see why they don't want the guy on their team anymore, but aren't they hurting their team if they won't take prime draft picks to get rid of him? Seems like they are cutting off their nose to spite their face. Stay tuned.
